The 3 biggest mistakes beginner lifters make (and what to do instead)

I've been training for years and coaching beginners for a while now. The same 3 mistakes come up every single time. If you're just starting out — or you've been lifting for a while with no real progress — read this.

1. Program hopping

You do a program for 2 weeks, don't see results, and switch to something you saw on TikTok. The truth is: almost any decent program works if you stick with it for 8-12 weeks. Pick one. Run it. Track your lifts. Adjust after.

2. Ego lifting

Nobody in the gym cares how much weight is on the bar. Nobody. Dropping the weight by 20% and actually controlling the movement will build more muscle and keep you injury-free. Your joints will thank you in 5 years.

3. Ignoring recovery

You don't grow in the gym — you grow when you recover. Sleep 7-8 hours. Eat enough protein (0.7-1g per lb of bodyweight). Take rest days seriously. Training 7 days a week doesn't make you hardcore, it makes you overtrained.

The fix is simple: Pick a proven program, check your ego at the door, and treat recovery like it's part of your training — because it is.

I built IronMind to help beginners stop spinning their wheels. If this sounds like you, come check it out.

The 3 mistakes every beginner makes in the gym (and how to fix them)

I've been training for years and I see the same 3 mistakes from beginners over and over. If you're just getting started, fixing these will save you months of wasted effort.

Mistake 1: No program, just vibes

Walking into the gym without a plan is like driving without a map. You end up doing random exercises, never progressing, and wondering why nothing changes. Pick a simple program (Starting Strength, GZCLP, or something similar) and follow it for 12 weeks. Don't modify it. Just run it.

Mistake 2: Ego lifting

Nobody in the gym cares how much weight you're moving. But your joints care a lot. Drop the weight, nail the form, and build a foundation. You'll end up stronger in 6 months than the guy swinging 50kg bicep curls with his entire back.

Mistake 3: Ignoring recovery

Training breaks your muscles down. Sleep and food build them back up. If you're sleeping 5 hours and eating like a bird, you're fighting yourself. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep and enough protein (1.6-2g per kg bodyweight).

Fix these three things and you'll be ahead of 90% of gym beginners.

I run a community called IronMind where I help beginners build proper training habits from day one. If you're serious about getting started the right way, come check it out.
