3 Speed Drills Every Footballer Should Do Weekly
Most footballers train hard but train wrong. They spend hours on the ball but ignore the one thing scouts actually clock first: how fast you move without it.
Here are 3 drills that changed my acceleration on the pitch:
1. 10-Yard Sprint to Cut
Set up two cones 10 yards apart. Explode from a standing start, decelerate hard, and cut 45° left or right. Rest 30 seconds. Repeat x8.
2. Lateral Shuffle to Sprint
Shuffle sideways for 5 yards, then explode forward for 15 yards. This mimics defensive recovery → counter-attack transitions. 6 reps each side.
3. Backwards Pedal to Forward Sprint
Backpedal 5 yards, plant, and sprint forward 20 yards. Defenders and midfielders do this 50+ times a match.
Do these 3x a week before your regular session. In 4 weeks, you'll feel the difference in every 50/50 ball.
If you want the full 12-week football performance program — that's what IronPath Pro is built for.
