Why 90% of "authentic" Japanese skincare sold in PH resellers isn't actually authentic
Been sourcing Japanese products for the Philippine market and want to share something most people don't realize:
A huge chunk of "Japan direct" skincare and snacks sold through PH resellers, Facebook groups, and Shopee stalls are actually:
Parallel imports bought from Japanese discount chains (Don Quijote, drugstores) then marked up 200-300% — not wrong, but not "exclusive" either
Near-expiry stock dumped by bulk buyers — check the date codes, a lot of skincare (especially SPF and vitamin C serums) degrades fast
Straight up counterfeits — SK-II, Hada Labo, and Shiseido are among the most faked Japanese brands sold online in SEA
How to actually verify authenticity as a buyer:
Japanese cosmetics have a manufacturing lot code, not just an expiry date — legit sellers can show you the lot
Real Japanese snack packaging uses specific font/print quality that's hard to fake — blurry text or slightly-off colors are red flags
Ask where it was sourced. "Direct from Japan" with no supplier name or receipt is a yellow flag
Started Japan Haul PH because I wanted a source I'd trust for my own family — direct sourcing, no resellers in between, no near-expiry dumping. If you're curious what real Japanese skincare/snacks feel like versus what's floating around resale groups, happy to answer questions here.
