The mistake most intermediate yogis make (and it's not about flexibility)
I've taught yoga for years, and the plateau almost every intermediate student hits isn't a flexibility problem — it's a breath problem.
Most people who've been practicing 1-2+ years can physically get into advanced shapes. Crow, wheel, even forearm stand with a wall. But they're white-knuckling through them, holding their breath, bracing instead of engaging. That's why the pose feels unstable even when the body 'knows' it.
The fix isn't more stretching. It's slowing down your inhale/exhale ratio inside the pose itself — not just in savasana. Try this next time you're in a hip opener or an arm balance: instead of holding your breath to 'stay still,' actively lengthen your exhale until it's longer than your inhale. You'll feel the shake stop almost immediately, because your nervous system stops treating the pose as a threat.
This is basically the whole philosophy behind how I structure classes now — breath-led sequencing, not just pose-chasing. If that resonates, I just opened up an online space with on-demand classes and live sessions built around this approach. Would love to have you.
