🛠️ Turning Pokémon Emerald Into The Ultimate Jujutsu Kaisen Culling Game ROM Hack
What happens when you fuse the brutal, high-stakes elimination tournament of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 with the engine of Pokémon Emerald? You get the ultimate crossover: a ROM hack where the Hoenn region becomes a battlefield of barriers, cursed techniques replace abilities, and pocket monsters are reskinned into deadly sorcerers and cursed spirits.
Here is the complete development blueprint for transforming Generation 3 Pokémon into a dark, strategic Jujutsu sandbox.
🗺️ The Map: Rewriting Hoenn Into The 10 Colonies
In the Culling Game, players are trapped inside massive urban barriers. Instead of standard gym challenges, we are repurposing the classic Hoenn map into locked Colonies. Using tools like Advance Map, custom tile blocks and strength boulders will trap the player inside specific routes until they defeat that colony's boss.
Rustboro City (Sendai Colony): Home to the brutal four-way deadlock. You must survive tactical skirmishes before facing Yuta Okkotsu.
Slateport City (Tokyo No. 2 Colony): The shipyard and docks are the perfect backdrop for the historic electrical showdown with Hajime Kashimo.
Lilycove City (Tokyo No. 1 Colony): An urban sprawl where you navigate rooftops to track down Hiromi Higuruma and his courtroom barrier.
📊 The Type Chart Shift: Sorcery Over Elements
To make the combat feel like Jujutsu Kaisen, we used Hex Maniac Advance to completely overwrite the 17 traditional Pokémon types. The standard physical/special split of Gen 3 fits perfectly with martial arts vs. long-range cursed energy.
🥊 Martial Arts & Combat Types (Physical)
Sorcerer (Formerly Normal): Baseline grade sorcerers using standard cursed energy.
Taijutsu (Formerly Fighting): Pure physical power and weapon mastery (e.g., Maki, Toji).
Blood (Formerly Poison): Corrosive, piercing blood manipulation.
Shadow (Formerly Ground): Stealth tactics and storage domains (e.g., Megumi's Ten Shadows).
Wind (Formerly Flying): Slicing kinetic strikes and aerial mobility.
Insect (Formerly Bug): Swarm-based curses and hive minds.
Earth (Formerly Rock): Heavy matter and structural defense.
Tool (Formerly Steel): Cursed objects, blades, and mechanical puppets.
🌌 Cursed Energy & Disaster Types (Special)
Pyrokinesis (Formerly Fire): Heat energy and volcanic disasters (e.g., Jogo).
Ocean (Formerly Water): Sea-based disaster curses and tidal fields (e.g., Dagon).
Nature (Formerly Grass): Roots, buds, and forest disaster manipulation (e.g., Hanami).
Spark (Formerly Electric): Crackling, lightning-like cursed energy properties (e.g., Kashimo).
Frost (Formerly Ice): Ice formation and absolute zero conditions (e.g., Uraume).
Jujutsu (Formerly Psychic): Brain-centric techniques, barriers, and spatial manipulation (e.g., Gojo).
Vengeful (Formerly Ghost): Spirits born of human hatred and phantom anomalies (e.g., Rika).
Mythic (Formerly Dragon): Peak historical sorcerers and god-like threats (e.g., Sukuna, Angel).
Curse (Formerly Dark): Malicious, soul-altering cursed energy (e.g., Mahito, Kenjaku).
👾 Indexing The Culling Game: The New Pokédex
Instead of coding 135 brand-new entities from scratch, we mapped the existing Hoenn Pokédex slots directly onto JJK characters, Shikigami, and Curses to streamline development.
[#001 - #003 Treecko Line] ➔ Grasshopper Curse ➔ Hanami (Form 1) ➔ Hanami (Unleashed)
[#004 - #006 Torchic Line] ➔ Finger Bearer (Juv) ➔ Finger Bearer (Awk) ➔ Sukuna (Enchain Form)
[#010 - #011 Poochyena Line] ➔ Divine Dog (Black) ➔ Divine Dog (Totality)
[#029 - #031 Ralts Line] ➔ Yuta (Childhood) ➔ Yuta (Jujutsu High) ➔ Yuta (Special Grade)
[#036 - #038 Slakoth Line] ➔ Yuji (Baseline) ➔ Yuji (Enraged) ➔ Yuji (Divergent Fist)
[#040 - #041 Nincada Splits] ➔ Naoya (Human Form) ➔ Naoya (Vengeful Cursed Spirit)
[#055 - #057 Aron Line] ➔ Iron Puppet ➔ Mechamaru (Grade 1) ➔ Max Elephant Shikigami
[#060 - #061 Electrike Line] ➔ Kashimo (Base) ➔ Kashimo (Genju Kohaku Ultimate Form)
[#116 - #117 Wynaut Line] ➔ Hakari (Idle Death)➔ Hakari (Unkillable Jackpot Form)

[#131 - #133 Beldum Line] ➔ Gojo (Childhood) ➔ Gojo (High School) ➔ Gojo (The Honored One)
💎 Showcasing the Meta-Breaking Legendaries
The late-game Pokédex slots match the apocalyptic power levels of the manga:
#138 Latios ➔ Toji Fushiguro: Possesses a custom passive that gives him zero cursed energy signature, making him completely immune to psychic/tracking status moves while dealing piercing Taijutsu damage.
#140 Groudon ➔ True Form Sukuna: A physical powerhouse that automatically warps the battlefield into a flaming wasteland, tearing through teams with Malevolent Shrine.
#141 Rayquaza ➔ Unsealed Gojo: The absolute peak of the game, boasting a permanent Wonder Guard variant representing his passive Limitless barrier.
⚙️ Coding the Sorcery: Abilities & Game Loop
To make this feel like a true battle shonen game, we have to push the Gen 3 engine to its limits using XSE (eXtreme Script Editor).
🎰 Feature Spotlight: Kinji Hakari's Jackpot Mechanic
How do we balance Hakari’s infinite regeneration in a turn-based RPG? Slot #117 (Jackpot Hakari) is programmed with maxed-out defensive stats and a custom variant of the Leftovers/Rain Dish ability. Every single turn, Hakari automatically restores 50% of his maximum HP. To balance this, his player phase lasts exactly 4 turns before forcing him to revert back to his fragile base form (#116).
🪙 The Point System & Kogane
Gym Badges are entirely replaced with Culling Game Points. Defeating colony wanderers awards you 5 points, while taking down a major Colony Boss nets you 100. Your floating Kogane assistant (#142) acts as your key menu option, tracking your point balance. Once you hit a point threshold, you can trigger a script to "Declare a New Rule," which physically opens up new routes on the Hoenn map.
