🥇 XAU levels for the New York open - which side gives first?

Session: NY opens 12:30 UTC, so this is a pre-open read.

  • Structure: 4402 sits under VWAP 4413, EMA 25/100/200 stacked bearish on both M15 and M5.

📊 Key levels

🔼 Resistance: 4406 → 4413

🔽 Support: 4394 → 4390.5

🔑 The setup

  • Value area: the 4406 VAH was rejected twice; POC and mPOC cluster at 4394; VAL floor 4390.5.

  • Down: lose 4400, opens 4394 then 4390.5.

  • Up: reclaim 4406, opens 4409 then 4413.

  • Range: stuck 4394-4406, stand aside.

  • Invalid: a close back above 4413.

🗞️ Backdrop

Reuters reports gold stayed subdued as traders waited on key US inflation data, with oil firmer on Middle East tensions, and softer gold weighing on TSX futures. That fits a market sitting on its hands. It does not move the levels above.

To be explicit about what would make this read wrong, because the poll only gives you three doors: it is not a wick through 4413. It is acceptance beyond it, a close that then holds there. A poke that closes straight back inside is the level doing its job. I have called that a break more times than I would like to admit, which is most of why the rule is written down now instead of decided live.

Tick Data or It Did Not Happen

If you are testing anything that holds for minutes rather than days, minute bars are not good enough,

and the reason is specific rather than a matter of taste.

A one minute bar tells you where price opened, closed, and the extremes it reached. It does not tell

you the order those extremes happened in. Inside that bar price might have run to your target first

and then to your stop, or to your stop first and then your target. The bar looks identical either

way.

For a scalping strategy that is not a detail. That is the trade. A backtest built on bars has to

guess the path, and every guessing convention I know of is generous to the strategy in some

situations and brutal in others, which means your results contain a fudge factor you cannot see or

size.

Ticks remove the guess. The path is the data.

There is a second-order lesson underneath this one that took me longer to learn. Do not trust the

label on a tick file. I verify tick history by density, checking how many updates actually arrived

per period against what that market plausibly produces, because a file can be labelled tick data and

still be reconstructed, thinned, or full of gaps that quietly flatter anything tested on it.

What I found:

Every scalping backtest I have seen presented publicly was run on bars, and almost none of them

mentioned it. It is not usually dishonesty. Most people do not know the path is missing.

Tell me where this breaks. I would rather know now than later.

The honest limit here is execution, not analysis. A read like this survives contact with a chart far better than it survives contact with a human deciding whether to take it at 3am, which is most of why I stopped deciding and wrote the rules into an engine instead.

On Gold, Volume Is a Number Everyone Agreed to Call Something Else

Here is the caveat that almost nobody selling volume analysis will tell you, and I would rather you

heard it from me.

On spot gold and most CFDs there is no real traded volume. There is no central exchange reporting

how much actually changed hands. What your platform labels volume is the tick count, which is how

many price updates arrived in that period.

Those are different things. Tick count measures how busy the feed was. Traded volume measures how

much business was done. They correlate well enough to be genuinely useful, and I do use tick volume,

extensively, as the foundation of my whole approach.

But anyone selling you institutional order flow on a retail gold feed is selling you a proxy and

calling it the thing.

I say this often, for a slightly selfish reason as well as an honest one. It is checkable. You can

verify it in ten minutes with your own broker's documentation. And once a reader has checked one

uncomfortable thing I told them and found it true, everything else I say gets read differently.

The proxy is still worth building on. Where the tick activity clusters really does mark where the

market spent its attention, and that structure holds up. I just want you to know what you are

looking at, because a tool you understand the limits of is safer than a tool you believe in.

What I found:

The caveat did not weaken the method. Knowing exactly what my data is and is not is the reason I can

tell you where the method breaks.

If you think I have this wrong, say so. That is useful to me.

One thing worth saying out loud that the post above does not: every number I publish comes off my own data and my own execution, so it carries my blind spots with it. If you have run something similar and got a different answer, I would rather have the different answer than the agreement.

🥇 XAU levels for the London open - which way does it break?

📊 XAU Asia (live, ~60min to close): 4399, under VWAP 4411 and every EMA on both M15 and M5.

  • Net Vol ▼ 62%, and price sits below the M15 value-area low at 4419

  • The bounce off the 4394.6 shelf is running on fading volume

  • Holding 4394.6 → room back to 4407.5, then the 4411 POC/VWAP magnet

📊 Key levels

🔼 Resistance: 4407.5 → 4411

🔽 Support: 4394.6 → 4389.6

🔑 The setup

  • A close under 4394.6 → opens 4389.6, then mVAL 4380

  • Asia force-closes 06:00 UTC, EU opens 07:00 UTC

  • Invalid: a close back through 4411.5.

🗞️ Backdrop

Reuters reports gold eased as robust US payrolls lifted rate-hike bets, with inflation data next in focus. That coincided with the drop off 4422 on this tape. It does not change the levels below, which stay the reference either way.

One number matters more than the targets: 4411.5. That is where I stop arguing with the chart. I publish it before the session rather than after because a stop level decided while a position is open is not a stop level, it is a negotiation.

Same chart, two readings

The engine and I looked at the same five minute gold chart at the same time. It saw price outside the value area on a day whose spread made the trade too expensive, so it stood aside.

I saw a breakout.

We were both looking at exactly the same pixels. The difference was that one of us had written down, in advance and while calm, what would make the trade not worth taking.

How Do You Actually Read a Volume Profile?

New Journal piece: the reading discipline itself, given away in full. Point of control as terrain rather than target, why a level only means something on the horizon it was built on, and the four checks a level has to pass before it becomes a rule you can test.

If you have tested this yourself, I want to hear what you found.

The part of this I keep having to re-learn is that a rule only counts if it was written down before the candle, not after it. If anything above reads like hindsight to you, say so and I will go back and check when it was actually decided.

I Registered 137 Experiments and 122 of Them Did Not Become a Product

The part of my process I am most confident about is also the least impressive to look at.

Every experiment gets registered before it runs, with the decision rule written down in advance.

What would count as a pass. What would count as a failure. Declared while I still do not know the

answer, which is the only time a person can declare it honestly.

The registry currently holds 137 experiments. 45 were rejected outright. 72 were kept as

research only, interesting but not shippable. 11 reached a lock. So 122 of 137 did not become a

product, and all of them are still queryable.

I keep the failures because a rejection ledger is the only thing that makes a success claim

checkable. Anyone can show you what worked. The question that separates a process from a highlight

reel is whether the things that did not work were recorded with the same care, at the time, before

anyone knew how the story would end.

Writing the rule down first is the whole mechanism. Once you have seen a result, you can always

construct a reason it counts. I have done it. The registry exists because I do not trust myself in

that moment, and building a process around not trusting yourself in specific, predictable moments is

most of what systematic means.

What I found:

I did not find an edge. I rejected 122 registered experiments, and one of the survivors turned out

to be worth shipping.

If you have tested this yourself, I want to hear what you found.

If you disagree with the post above, the useful form of that is the specific thing you would have done differently. That is something I can go and test. “It looks wrong” is not, and I have lost weeks to the second kind of feedback, most of it my own.

Nothing looks untested at 3am

03:41. Gold doing nothing in particular. I am staring at a shelf from the previous session and constructing an extremely reasonable story about why it hasnt been tested yet.

It had been tested. Twice. I was looking at the wrong session because I had scrolled and not re-read the label, which is a thing that happens to tired people and not to a script.

The chart was fine. The instrument reading it needed sleep.

7,718 Configurations. Three Systems Shipped

I want to put a number on something that usually stays vague, because I think it is the single most

misleading gap in how retail strategy results get presented.

To ship three systems, my C++ tick engine simulated 7,718 distinct strategy configurations. Roughly

two and a half thousand examined per system that made it out.

Now think about what that means for the winner. If you try enough variations of anything, some of

them will look excellent purely by chance. Not because you cheated. Because that is what randomness

does when you sample it thousands of times and then keep the best sample.

So the honest question about any backtest is not "how good is this result". It is "how good is this

result, given how many results were generated to find it". Those numbers pull in opposite

directions, and only the first one ever appears in the screenshot.

This is why I discount my own survivors. A result that came from a search across thousands of

configurations has to clear a higher bar than the same result found on the first try, and the

mathematics of that adjustment is not optional or philosophical, it is the correction that makes the

claim honest.

What I found:

When someone shows me a strategy result, I have stopped asking how it performed. I ask how many

versions of it they built before this one, and the answer is usually either a number or a silence,

and both are informative.

Has anyone here tested the same thing and got a different answer?

If you are reading this without having joined anything: the part worth taking is the method, not the level. Levels expire in hours. Writing the invalidation down before the entry has held up for me a great deal longer than any single number has.
