I made $2,400 flipping Pokémon cards last month — here's what I learned
Most people think Pokémon cards are just nostalgia. They're wrong — they're one of the most underrated alternative investments out there.
Here are 3 things I wish someone told me when I started:
1. Raw cards are where the money is (if you know what to look for)
Everyone chases graded slabs, but the real margins are in buying raw cards that grade well. A $15 raw Charizard that comes back PSA 9 is suddenly worth $80-120. Learn to spot centering, surface quality, and edge wear before you buy.
2. Timing matters more than the card itself
Set releases create predictable price cycles. Cards almost always dip 2-3 weeks after release, then climb once supply dries up. If you're buying on release day, you're paying a premium. Wait for the dip.
3. The Japanese market is still underpriced
Japanese Pokémon cards have tighter quality control, lower print runs, and a growing international collector base. Cards that cost $5 in Japan are selling for $25-40 in the US market. Arbitrage is alive and well.
I break down plays like this every week inside Pocket Profits — real strategies, not hype. If you're serious about turning cards into cash, this is where you want to be.
