5 things I wish I knew before selling my first beat
I've been producing for years and selling beats online. Here's what nobody told me when I started:
1. Your mix matters more than your melody.
Buyers on BeatStars, Airbit, and YouTube are listening on phone speakers and earbuds. If your low end is muddy or your 808s clip, they're scrolling past — even if the melody is fire.
2. Tag placement is an art.
Put your tag every 15-20 seconds, NOT on the downbeat. Let the beat breathe. A badly placed tag kills the vibe and the sale.
3. Consistency beats quality at first.
Posting 3 beats a week that are 7/10 will grow your catalog and audience faster than dropping one "masterpiece" a month. Volume builds momentum.
4. YouTube SEO is free marketing.
Title your beats like: "Hard Trap Beat 2026 - 'Venom' | Drake Type Beat". Stack those keywords. Most beatmakers sleep on this.
5. Price your leases correctly.
Start at $19.99-$29.99 for MP3 leases. Don't undersell yourself at $5 — it signals low quality. Premium pricing attracts premium artists.
If you're trying to level up your production and actually make money from your beats, I'm building a free community for exactly that. Pull up.
