Fifty two rejects

The experiment registry has a hundred and fifty eight entries. Fifty two rejected, five stopped partway, eighty three research only, eighteen promoted, and three that I actually ship. πŸ§ͺ

Roughly one in fifty. I keep the failures queryable because a folder of only good results is a folder that has been edited.

The rejects are also the more interesting read, which nobody warns you about.

Educational purpose only. Not financial advice.

Who else has done exactly this?

The Trap of Recent Wins

Recent wins can be dangerous. ⚠️

They make a strategy feel better than it is.

They also make the trader feel smarter than the data allows.

That is why I keep returning to broader samples and harder tests.

A good week is nice.

A durable edge is what matters.

What I learned:

Do not let short-term success rewrite your risk standards.

In the DQuants engine I developed I judge an idea on walk-forward and out-of-sample windows, not on whatever the last few weeks happened to do.

Where would you expect this to break first?

If you disagree with the post above, the useful form of that is the specific thing you would have done differently. That is something I can go and test. β€œIt looks wrong” is not, and I have lost weeks to the second kind of feedback, most of it my own.

β‚Ώ BTC levels for the New York open - what is your chart telling you?

83,012 is the lid. A close above opens 83,425; under 82,600 this map is wrong.

  • Last read: 82,673 broke higher, 82,850 tagged, 82,468 held βœ…

  • πŸ“ˆ M5 Net Vol β–Ό17%: sellers lean on this push, so the lean is slight.

  • M15 close over 83,012 β†’ mPOC 83,062, then VAH 83,425

  • Lose 82,655 β†’ 82,600, then 82,400

  • β›” Under 82,600 the up read is wrong, and the next scorecard says so.

πŸ“Š Key levels

πŸ”Ό Resistance: 83012 β†’ 83425

πŸ”½ Support: 82655 β†’ 82400 β†’ 82600

πŸ”‘ The setup

  • πŸ“Š BTC US (opens 12:30 UTC, thin weekend): 82,798, above VWAP 82,655 and the M15 EMAs, under POC 83,012. Lean 55/45 higher.

  • Invalid: a close back through 82600.

To be explicit about what would make this read wrong, because the poll only gives you three doors: it is not a wick through 82600. It is acceptance beyond it, a close that then holds there. A poke that closes straight back inside is the level doing its job. I have called that a break more times than I would like to admit, which is most of why the rule is written down now instead of decided live.

Why This Matters to Discretion Traders

Discretion traders already understand context. πŸ”

The next step is turning context into a repeatable framework.

That is where systematic trading becomes powerful.

It preserves the best parts of discretion while removing the weakest parts of emotion.

What I learned:

A discretionary edge becomes stronger when it is made more explicit and testable.

That is the path MasterVP took: a Volume Profile read made explicit enough to backtest on real tick data.

Entry or exit: which one would you test first?

The honest limit here is execution, not analysis. A read like this survives contact with a chart far better than it survives contact with a human deciding whether to take it at 3am, which is most of why I stopped deciding and wrote the rules into an engine instead.

β‚Ώ BTC levels for the New York open - which side gives first?

83,100 decides this NY open. Hold it and 83,432 is retested; lose it and 82,700 is next.

  • β–² Hold 83,100 (M15 mPOC) and close over VAH 83,432 β†’ thin volume up to 83,800

  • β–Ό M5 close under 83,100 β†’ 82,700-82,760 (mVAH + M15 EMA200), then VWAP 82,380

πŸ“Š Key levels

πŸ”Ό Resistance: 83432 β†’ 83800

πŸ”½ Support: 83100 β†’ 82380 β†’ 82700

πŸ”‘ The setup

  • Last read: 82,660 invalidation broke and price ran to 83,432, that map was wrong ❌

  • BTC pre-NY (opens 12:30 UTC): 83,223 after a breakout from 82,500, above VWAP 82,378 and every EMA. Lean 55/45 higher.

  • β†’ Stuck 83,100-83,432: wait for a close

  • Invalid: below 82,700 this map is wrong. If it prints before 83,432, the next scorecard says so.

πŸ—žοΈ Backdrop

Reuters reports a softer dollar and easing yields overnight, with the Fed outlook in focus. Neither materially changes the BTC levels above.

One number matters more than the targets: 82700. That is where I stop arguing with the chart. I publish it before the session rather than after because a stop level decided while a position is open is not a stop level, it is a negotiation.

πŸ₯‡ XAU levels for the New York open - where do you think it goes from here?

4175 decides the NY open. Hold it and 4207 is back in play; lose it and 4162 is next.

  • β–² M5 close above 4192 β†’ 4207 retest

  • β–Ό M5 close below 4175 β†’ 4162 (mVAH + EMA100)

  • β†’ 4175-4192 chop: stand aside

πŸ“Š Key levels

πŸ”Ό Resistance: 4192 β†’ 4207

πŸ”½ Support: 4175 β†’ 4162

πŸ”‘ The setup

  • Last read: 4186 printed (high 4207), the 4161 invalidation held βœ…

  • XAU US (opens 12:30 UTC, ~30' away): 4185, above VWAP 4177, EMA 25/100/200 stacked up on M15. Lean 55/45 lower near term.

  • Net Vol β–Ό 65%: sellers lean on the 4183-4192 shelf after the 4207 rejection.

  • Invalid: above 4210 this map is wrong.

πŸ—žοΈ Backdrop

Reuters reports gold rose over 1% in Asia on a softer dollar, easing yields and lower oil, with the Fed outlook in focus. That matches the run into 4207; it does not change today's levels.

A prop firm is the stress test, not the showcase

When I moved the five minute system from a retail broker to a prop firm feed, it did not

transfer. πŸ“Š I want to be plain about that, because the marketing version of this story would have

skipped it.

Same code. Same instrument. Same logic. Different execution environment, and the result did not

survive the move.

What I found:

If your system has never been run somewhere less forgiving than where you developed it, you do

not yet know which parts of it are real.

Where would you expect this to break first?

The part of this I keep having to re-learn is that a rule only counts if it was written down before the candle, not after it. If anything above reads like hindsight to you, say so and I will go back and check when it was actually decided.

Byte for byte

The research engine and the shipped Expert have to produce an identical trade file on the same ticks. Not similar. Identical. πŸ§ͺ

It caught a real defect once and the defect made my reported result BETTER. Eyeballing the equity curve would have sailed straight past it, because who audits good news.

That is the whole argument for the gate. Not that it catches errors. That it catches the flattering ones.

Technical Insight: Edge Is Conditional

One of the biggest quant lessons is that edge is usually conditional. πŸ§ͺ

It is not everywhere.

It exists in certain regimes, sessions, volatility states, or structure zones.

That means the job is not only to find signals.

It is to find the conditions where the signal deserves to exist.

What I learned:

Knowing when not to trade is part of finding edge.

In the DQuants engine I developed I tag every backtest by session and volatility state, so a rule only ships if it holds in the regime it was built for.

Where would you expect this to break first?

Standing caveat on anything I put out: sample size beats conviction, and I have been confidently wrong on small samples often enough to stop trusting the confident feeling. If something here looks like it rests on too few observations, push on it.

β‚Ώ BTC levels for the New York open - which way does it break?

82,290 is the line: back above it and this was a flush, stay below and 82,000 is next.

  • Last read: 83,100 printed (83,212) before 82,180 did, so that map was wrong ❌

  • Flow: fresh low under 82,180, sell volume rising into it.

  • Value area: resistance 82,290 (M15 mVAL), support 82,000.

  • Stay below 82,290 β†’ 82,000, then 81,800

πŸ“Š Key levels

πŸ”Ό Resistance: 82290 β†’ 83030

πŸ”½ Support: 82000 β†’ 81800

πŸ”‘ The setup

  • Session: BTC pre-New York, opens 12:30 UTC (~25'). Context down, lean 55/45 lower. Price 82,170, below VWAP 82,777, EMAs stacked down.

  • M5 close back above 82,290 β†’ 82,780 (VAL + VWAP), then 83,030 (mPOC)

  • Stuck 82,000-82,290 β†’ no read, wait for a close

  • Invalid: above 82,780 this map is wrong.

πŸ—žοΈ Backdrop

Reuters reports the dollar holding near an 18-month high as bond yields rise. Firmer yields coincided with BTC's slide today, but they do not change the levels above.
