Why 'follow my trades' groups are the worst thing that ever happened to retail traders

I spent years in signal groups before I built Plandells, and I want to say something unpopular: signal groups are actively bad for your development as a trader, even when the signals are profitable.

Here's why. A signal group outsources the two hardest, most important skills in trading — reading the market and knowing when to act — to someone else. You never build the muscle. You never learn to sit with uncertainty. You just wait for a notification. The moment that group goes quiet, gets banned, or the caller has a bad month, you're back to zero with none of the underlying skill you'd need to trade on your own.

The traders who actually make it long-term all converge on the same thing: a repeatable process they can execute without anyone's permission. That means:

  1. A defined edge you can articulate in one sentence. If you can't explain why your strategy should make money, you don't have an edge — you have a hunch.

  2. Backtested statistics, not vibes. Win rate, average R, max drawdown, sample size. If you haven't tested it across at least 100+ occurrences, you're guessing.

  3. Position sizing rules set BEFORE you're in a trade. Emotion-driven sizing is how small losses become account-blowing ones.

  4. A journal you actually review. Most traders repeat the same three mistakes for years because they never look back systematically.

None of this is exciting. It won't fit in a Discord ping. But it's the difference between someone who trades for a decade and someone who blows up four accounts and quits.

This is the whole premise behind what I'm building at Plandells — research, backtested tools, and a process framework, not calls to follow. Happy to break down any part of this further if useful to anyone here.
