Why most people overpay for 'key issues' — and how to actually spot value

Been deep in comic collecting/investing for a while now, and the #1 mistake I see new buyers make: they chase the label "key issue" without understanding why a book is a key.

A few things that actually move long-term value, ranked by what matters:

1. First appearances of characters that get adapted. Not every first appearance matters — it needs media momentum. A character showing up in a rumored Marvel/DC project can 3-5x a book's value in months, well before the movie/show even releases. This is the single biggest lever, and it's public information if you're watching the right announcements.

2. Print runs, not just "1st issue" stamps. A #1 issue from a series that got overprinted (looking at you, most 90s speculator-era books) will never appreciate like a low-print-run book from a smaller publisher. Check actual print run data, not just the cover.

3. Grading standards are inconsistent across sellers. A "near mint" listing on eBay and a CGC 9.8 are not the same book. Most of the spread between "deal" and "overpriced" comes down to condition disputes — learn to grade corners, spine stress, and color-breaks yourself before trusting a listing description.

4. Timing matters more than the book itself. Buying the week a casting announcement drops means you're buying the top. The move is watching industry rumor mills (casting leaks, Comic-Con panels, streaming slate news) before it's confirmed — that's where the real spread is.

None of this requires being a "comics expert." It requires paying attention to the right signals and having people around you who share what they're seeing before it's priced in. That's basically the whole game.

Happy to go deeper on any of these if useful.
