5 portfolio mistakes that are costing you clients
Most videographers have a portfolio that's working against them. After reviewing hundreds of reels and websites from filmmakers trying to go freelance, the same problems keep showing up.
1. Too many styles, no clear identity. If your portfolio has weddings, corporate, skateboarding, and food all mashed together — a client can't tell what you actually do. Pick a lane. You can always expand later.
2. Opening with your weakest work. Your first 3 pieces are the only ones that matter. Most people never scroll past them. Lead with your absolute best, not chronological order.
3. No context on the projects. "Shot on A7III, edited in Premiere" tells a client nothing. What was the goal? What problem did you solve? Clients hire problem-solvers, not camera operators.
4. Music doing all the heavy lifting. Mute your reel. Does it still hold up? If the entire emotional impact comes from the soundtrack, your actual filmmaking needs work.
5. No clear way to hire you. You'd be shocked how many portfolios have no email, no contact form, no pricing info. Make it stupidly easy for someone to give you money.
If even one of these hit home — come join Kismet. We're a community of videographers and filmmakers building portfolios that actually land work.
