5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Getting a Massage in KL
I've been living in KL for 3 years and visited 200+ massage spots. Here's what nobody tells first-time visitors:
1. "Traditional Malay Massage" is not the same as Thai massage
Urut Melayu uses long, deep strokes with herbal oils. It's intense and therapeutic — not the gentle stretch-based approach from Bangkok. Specify "relaxation" or you'll get a workout.
2. Pricing varies 5x depending on the neighborhood
A 60-min traditional massage costs RM35 in Cheras or RM180 in KLCC. The quality difference? Sometimes the cheap spot is better. Location markup is real.
3. The best spots don't have English signage
Hidden gems are in shophouses with Malay/Chinese signage. Google Reviews helps, but the best intel comes from expat communities and word of mouth.
4. Always negotiate packages, never walk-in price
Most places offer 5 or 10 session packages at 20-40% off. Even for a week-long trip, a 5-session package at a good spot is worth it.
5. Reflexology here is next level
Malaysian reflexology spots — especially Chinese-Malaysian family-run ones — are some of the best in Southeast Asia. Don't skip it.
I built RelaxKL to solve the problem I had when I first moved here: finding quality, vetted spots without getting ripped off. Every listing is personally reviewed.
