The 3 skills separating cloud engineers from cloud consultants

Most cloud engineers think the gap between a $120K salary and a $250K+ consulting practice is more certifications.

It's not. It's three skills nobody teaches in AWS/Azure/GCP training:

1. Discovery & Scoping

Clients don't come to you with a migration plan. They come with pain. "Our infrastructure costs are out of control" or "We need to be SOC 2 compliant by Q3." The consultant who can run a proper discovery call and scope a project wins the deal. Every time.

2. Solution Storytelling

You know the right architecture. But can you explain WHY it's right to a CFO who doesn't know what a VPC is? The best solutions architects sell through clarity, not complexity. Architecture diagrams are for your team. Business outcomes are for the buyer.

3. Delivery Frameworks

Freelance cloud work falls apart without repeatable processes. Statement of Work templates, milestone-based billing, weekly status cadences, escalation paths. Boring? Yes. The difference between a side gig and a real practice? Also yes.

If you're an IT professional thinking about making the jump to cloud consulting — these are the muscles to build first. Technical depth is table stakes. Business execution is the multiplier.
