The 3 Places Your Lost Files Are Hiding Right Now
Every week I talk to people who can't find a file they saved "somewhere on their laptop" two days ago. After helping dozens of them, the pattern is always the same.
Your lost files are in one of three places:
1. Downloads (the graveyard)
You downloaded it, opened it, did the thing, and never moved it. It's sitting in Downloads between 400 other files named "invoice.pdf" and "Screenshot 2026-04-12." Sort by date modified and you'll find it in 10 seconds.
2. Desktop (the junk drawer)
You dragged it there "temporarily" and then opened 14 other windows on top of it. It's still there. It's just buried under the same chaos that made you lose it.
3. The folder you made during your last cleanup binge
Two months ago you got motivated, created a bunch of folders like "Important" or "Work Stuff Q1," moved a bunch of files in, and then never used the system again. Your file is in one of those folders — probably the one with the vaguest name.
The real problem isn't that you lost the file. It's that you don't have a system for where things go right after you use them. That 5-second decision after every task is the difference between a clean laptop and a weekly scavenger hunt.
If this sounds familiar, I built a kit that fixes exactly this — from finding what's lost right now, to setting up a structure you'll actually keep using.
