The math nobody does before a long layover

I've spent way too many hours in airport terminals doing the same mental math over and over: flight lands at X, connection boards at Y, security here usually takes Z... do I actually have time to leave and see something, or am I just going to stress-sprint back through security with 10 minutes to spare?

Most people default to "just stay in the terminal" because the math is annoying and the downside (missing your flight) is brutal. But a 4-6 hour layover in cities like Singapore, Istanbul, Doha, or Reykjavik is genuinely enough time to leave the airport and do something memorable, IF you know your real time budget.

The variables that actually matter:

Live flight status (delays eat into your window fast)
Real-time traffic to/from the airport (not the Google Maps "typical time")
Current security/immigration wait times for re-entry (this is the one everyone underestimates)
