5 Mandarin phrases that'll make Chinese people think you're fluent

I've been teaching Mandarin for years, and here's a secret: you don't need thousands of words to impress native speakers. You need the RIGHT words.

1. 没事儿 (méi shìr) — "No worries / It's nothing"

Drop this casually and people will double-take. The 儿 sound is classic Beijing-accent, and it sounds incredibly natural.

2. 差不多 (chà bu duō) — "More or less / Close enough"

Chinese people use this ALL the time. In restaurants, at work, everywhere. Once you start using it, you can't stop.

3. 随便 (suí biàn) — "Whatever / Up to you"

Someone asks what you want to eat? 随便. Where to go? 随便. Most useful lazy word in Mandarin.

4. 是吗?(shì ma?) — "Really? / Is that so?"

The ultimate conversation extender. Someone tells you something, you say 是吗?and suddenly you're having a real conversation.

5. 不好意思 (bù hǎo yì si) — "Excuse me / Sorry (casual)"

Way more natural than 对不起 for everyday situations.

The trick isn't memorizing vocabulary lists. It's using high-frequency phrases that native speakers actually say every day.
