Why Most People Fail at Learning Chinese (And How to Actually Do It)

I've taught Mandarin to hundreds of non-native speakers. Here's what I've learned:

The #1 mistake: Trying to memorize characters before understanding tones and sentence structure. Chinese isn't English with different symbols — it's a completely different way of organizing thought.

What actually works:

  • Tones first. Spend your first 2 weeks ONLY on tones. Boring? Yes. But if your tones are wrong, native speakers literally can't understand you — no matter how many words you know.

  • Sentences over vocabulary. Don't memorize isolated words. Learn "我想喝咖啡" (I want to drink coffee) instead of "咖啡 = coffee." Your brain retains patterns, not flashcards.

  • 15 min/day beats 2 hr/week. Language learning is a muscle. Consistency > intensity. Every time.

  • Talk to yourself. Narrate your day in Chinese. "我在刷牙" (I'm brushing my teeth). Sounds weird. Works incredibly well.

I built SiyuanEducation because I got tired of seeing motivated people give up after 3 months because they were using the wrong approach.

If you're serious about learning Mandarin, I structured my course around the exact sequence that gets people to conversational Chinese the fastest.
