5 Arabic phrases that will save you on your next trip to the Middle East

Traveling to Dubai, Amman, or Cairo? Skip Google Translate. These 5 phrases will make locals respect you instantly:

1. السلام عليكم (As-salamu alaykum) — "Peace be upon you." The universal greeting. Use it everywhere — hotel lobbies, taxis, restaurants. Reply: وعليكم السلام (Wa alaykum as-salam).

2. شكراً (Shukran) — "Thank you." Simple, powerful, always appreciated.

3. كم الحساب؟ (Kam al-hisab?) — "How much is the bill?" Essential for markets, restaurants, and avoiding tourist prices.

4. أين...؟ (Ayna...?) — "Where is...?" Follow it with المطار (al-matar = airport), الفندق (al-funduq = hotel), or الحمام (al-hammam = bathroom).

5. إن شاء الله (Inshallah) — "God willing." You'll hear this constantly. Use it when talking about future plans — it shows cultural awareness.

Pro tip: Even if your pronunciation isn't perfect, the effort alone earns respect. Arabs genuinely love it when foreigners try.
