The 3-second rule that changed how I make friends

Most people overthink starting conversations.

They wait for the "perfect moment," rehearse what to say in their head, and then... the moment passes. Every time.

Here's what actually works: the 3-second rule.

When you see someone you want to talk to, you have 3 seconds to say something — anything. After that, your brain starts generating reasons NOT to do it.

"They look busy."

"They probably don't want to talk."

"I don't know what to say."

None of that is real. It's your anxiety filling in the blanks.

So what do you say? It literally doesn't matter as much as you think:

  • "Hey, I like your jacket — where'd you get it?"

  • "What are you working on?" (at a coffee shop)

  • "How do you know [host]?" (at any gathering)

The words are just a door. The real conversation starts after.

I spent years studying why some people effortlessly build friend groups while others struggle to maintain a single friendship. It comes down to this: the people with friends aren't smoother or funnier — they just start more conversations.

That's what we teach inside Learn to Talk. Not pickup lines or manipulation tricks. Just practical frameworks for building real friendships as an adult.
