The 5 STEM study habits that actually work (and the 3 that waste your time)

I've tutored hundreds of uni STEM students. The pattern is always the same — the ones who struggle aren't less smart, they just study wrong.


What actually works:


  1. Solve before you read. Try the problem first, fail, then read the theory. Your brain retains 3x more when it's already struggling with the question.


  1. Teach it to someone (or pretend to). If you can't explain a concept in plain language, you don't understand it. Period.


  1. Space your reviews. Cramming the night before is how you get a C. Reviewing a little bit each day for 2 weeks is how you get an A.


  1. Work backwards from exams. Get past exams. Solve them under timed conditions. This is the closest thing to a cheat code that exists.


  1. Use AI as a tutor, not a crutch. Ask it to explain concepts, generate practice problems, and check your work — but always attempt the problem yourself first.


What wastes your time:


  • Re-reading your notes (passive = useless)

  • Highlighting textbooks (feels productive, isn't)

  • Watching 3-hour lecture recordings at 1x speed (just read the slides + work problems)
