Why most freelancers lose money without ever seeing it happen
Ran the numbers on my own freelance business last year and found something most freelancers never check: the gap between what you invoice and what actually hits your bank account.
Three silent leaks I found:
Late invoices = late payments. Every day you wait to send an invoice after finishing work is a day added to your payment cycle. Most freelancers invoice "when they get around to it." That's free financing you're giving your clients.
No cash flow forecast = no warning. If you don't know what's hitting your account in the next 30 days, you can't tell a slow month from a real problem until it's already a real problem.
Expenses tracked in your head. Come tax season, this becomes a guessing game — and guessing games cost you deductions.
The fix isn't a bookkeeper (too expensive for most solo freelancers) or a full accounting suite (overkill). It's having 4-5 simple templates you actually use every week: an invoice generator, a budget tracker, a cash flow planner, and an expense log.
That's the whole system. No software subscription, no learning curve — just discipline plus the right sheet.
Built exactly this as LedgerKit if anyone wants the templates I use myself.
