The 3-word phrase that gets you further in Spanish than 6 months of Duolingo
I started Lingua Lab because I watched too many smart, capable professionals spend months grinding grammar apps before a big move to Mexico City or Madrid — and still freeze up ordering coffee.
Here's the thing nobody tells you: fluency for real life isn't about vocabulary size. It's about conversational reflexes. The single highest-leverage phrase I teach every new student in week one is "¿Cómo se dice...?" ("How do you say...?"). It sounds trivial, but it does something an app never will — it keeps you IN the conversation instead of pulling out your phone to translate. The moment you stop translating and start asking, your brain switches from memorization mode to acquisition mode.
A few other things I've learned running live coaching sessions with people relocating for work:
Skip verb conjugation drills for the first month entirely. Learn 20 "conversation glue" phrases instead ("no entendí," "más despacio por favor," "¿qué significa...?"). You'll use these in every single interaction.
Practice with a real person within your first week, even if you're terrible. Passive learning (apps, videos) caps out fast because it never forces retrieval under pressure.
Set a "why" that's concrete — not "learn Spanish" but "be able to handle my apartment lease negotiation in Spanish by March." Vague goals produce vague effort.
If you're planning a move or extended travel to a Spanish-speaking country and want structured live coaching instead of another app you'll abandon — that's exactly what we built. Happy to answer questions here for anyone working through this on their own too.
