Why Every DevOps Engineer Needs to Master Bash (Not Just Know It)

Most DevOps engineers can write a bash script. Very few can write one that survives production.

I've spent years as a CI/CD specialist watching the same pattern repeat: engineers cobble together shell scripts that work on their laptop, push them to a pipeline, and watch them explode in ways they never expected.

The Gap

There's a massive gap between "I can write a for loop in bash" and "I can build reliable, maintainable automation that my team trusts in production." That gap costs teams hours of debugging, failed deployments, and 3am pages.

Here's what separates a production-grade bash script from a throwaway one:

  • Proper error handling — not just set -e, but understanding exit codes, trap handlers, and graceful cleanup

  • Idempotency — scripts that can run twice without breaking anything

  • Security — input validation, secret management, injection prevention

  • Testability — yes, you can and should unit test bash (look into BATS)

  • Performance — knowing when to use built-ins vs external commands, and how to parallelize

What I Built

I put together a 24-lesson course covering everything from shell fundamentals to blue/green deployment scripts. It's the curriculum I wish existed when I started.

The focus is entirely practical — every lesson ends with a hands-on exercise that mirrors real production scenarios.

If you're a junior-to-mid DevOps engineer, SRE, or sysadmin who wants to stop writing fragile scripts and start building automation you're proud of — this is for you.
