The real reason your kid melts down when you take the tablet away at bedtime

It's not about the screen. It's about the ending.

When a child is mid-game, mid-episode, mid-scroll — and you walk in and say "time's up" — you just became the villain in a story they didn't know was ending. Of course they melt down. They had no warning, no transition, no sense of closure.

Most parents try to fix this by negotiating in the moment. "Five more minutes." "After this episode." "I'll count to three." But the problem isn't the number of minutes. The problem is that the ending was never established before the screen started.

Here's what changed everything in our house:

Set the end time before the device goes into their hands.

Not after. Not during. Before. "You can have the tablet until 7:15. When the timer goes off, it goes on the charger."

That one shift — naming the boundary before the session begins — eliminated about 80% of the daily shutdown fights. Not because the child magically agrees. But because the ending becomes a fact of the session, not a surprise attack.

The other 20%? That's where the shutdown sequence, the scripts, and the traffic light system come in. But it all starts with that one move.

If you've got a 5-to-10-year-old and you're tired of fighting the same battle every night, this is where you start.
