Why your cracked screen probably shouldn't go to the Apple Store
Quick math most people never do before booking a screen repair:
Apple/carrier stores quote a flat rate before they've even looked at your phone — and that rate assumes worst-case parts and labor. A mail-in repair shop can actually inspect the damage first (is it just the glass, or the digitizer too?) and quote you based on what's actually wrong, not a blanket policy.
The tradeoff is obviously time — you're without your phone for a few days instead of an hour at the Genius Bar. But if you've got a backup device or can survive on a tablet for 48-72 hours, the savings are usually significant, especially on older iPhone models and most Android flagships where OEM screens are marked up hard in-store.
What to check before you mail anything in:
Get the quote in writing before you ship (a legit repair service will never ask you to send the phone blind)
Ask if they use OEM or aftermarket glass — this is the #1 lever on price
Confirm turnaround time and return shipping cost upfront
Started doing this full-time after fixing screens for friends for years and realizing how much people overpay by default. Happy to answer questions on what's worth fixing vs. not.
