I've taught Mandarin to hundreds of English speakers. Here are the 3 things that trip up almost everyone — and what to do instead.
Mistake #1: Ignoring tones
English doesn't have tones, so most beginners treat them as optional. They're not. "mā" (妈 = mom) and "mǎ" (马 = horse) are completely different words. Get your tones right from Day 1 and everything else becomes 10x easier.
Mistake #2: Memorizing characters before learning to speak
Characters are beautiful, but if you can't have a basic conversation, you're building a house without a foundation. Speak first. Read later.
Mistake #3: Studying alone with no feedback
Language is social. You need someone to tell you when your pronunciation is off. You need people to practice with. A textbook can't do that.
I built MandarinEdge to fix all three of these. Structured courses that start with tones and speaking, a community of learners to practice with, and direct feedback from a teacher.
If you've been wanting to learn Mandarin but don't know where to start — this is where you start.
Hey, welcome aboard! You just took the first step toward speaking Mandarin — and honestly, that's the hardest part.
Here's how to get started:
1. Jump into the course — Start with Lesson 1 (tones & pinyin). Don't skip this. Tones are everything in Chinese.
2. Join the study chat — Ask questions, share what you're learning, practice with other students. The more you use Chinese, the faster you learn.
3. Check Lessons & Updates — I post new lessons, tips, and practice exercises here regularly.
One tip: spend 15 minutes a day, every day. Consistency beats intensity when learning a language.
