How I went from 1 rental car to a dealer license (the actual steps)

Most people overthink starting a rental business. They think they need $100K, a lot full of cars, and some kind of special license just to get going. That's not how it works.

Here's the real progression:

Phase 1: Start with 1-3 cars

You can start with your own vehicle or buy a used car for $5-10K. List it on Turo, HyreCar, or market locally. Your goal isn't profit yet — it's learning operations, insurance, maintenance, and customer management.

Phase 2: Scale to 5-15 vehicles

Once you know your numbers (daily rate, utilization rate, maintenance cost per mile), you reinvest. Finance used vehicles, build relationships with auctions, and start building a brand — not just a side hustle.

Phase 3: Get your dealer license

This is where it gets serious. A dealer license lets you buy at auction (saving 20-40% per vehicle), sell vehicles for profit, AND run your rental fleet. The requirements vary by state, but it's way more achievable than people think — surety bond, location, and an application.

Phase 4: Build the empire

Now you're operating a hybrid model — rental revenue for cash flow, dealer sales for profit spikes. This is how you hit 7 figures. Multiple revenue streams from the same asset class.

The biggest mistake people make? Waiting until everything is "perfect" to start. You learn by doing. One car, one customer, one lesson at a time.

I'm breaking down every step of this inside MB Rentals.
