Why 90% of restaurant menu photos hurt sales (and how to fix it in one shoot)

Ran a photography business shooting restaurant menus for the last few years — here's the biggest mistake I see independent restaurants make with their photos, and it's costing them real money.

The mistake: shooting for Instagram, not for the menu.

A moody, dark, artsy shot looks great on a feed. It looks terrible next to a price on a delivery app thumbnail. Two completely different jobs:

  • Menu/delivery app photos need bright, even lighting, true-to-life color, and the dish centered and legible at thumbnail size. This is what actually drives clicks on DoorDash/UberEats — people order what looks like more food for the money.

  • Social photos can be moodier, tighter crops, more styling — they're selling a vibe, not a specific order.

Most restaurants hire one photographer, get one style, and use it everywhere. Then wonder why online orders didn't move even though "the photos look nice."

What actually works in one shoot session:

  1. Shoot every dish in bright, even light first (menu/app use)

  2. Then re-style 3-5 hero dishes with tighter, moodier shots (social use)

  3. Deliver both sets, sized correctly for each platform, not just one generic export

Restaurants that split their shoot this way consistently see better delivery app click-through than the ones using one aesthetic everywhere.

If you're a restaurant owner still using phone photos on your menu or delivery app — this is the #1 fastest ROI move you can make before running any ads.
