Why most mobile car washes fail in their first 90 days (and how we fixed it)
Started LA Auto Detailing because I got tired of driving 20 minutes to a car wash, waiting in line, and still getting a mediocre job. Figured other people felt the same.
Here's the part nobody tells you about running a mobile detailing business: the hard part isn't the washing, it's the scheduling. Most mobile washes die because they treat every booking as a one-off — you're constantly chasing new customers instead of building a route.
What actually works is flipping it into a membership. Instead of "book whenever," customers pay once a month for unlimited visits, and we build them into a fixed weekly/biweekly route based on their neighborhood. That does three things:
Predictable revenue instead of feast-or-famine bookings
Customers stop churning because cancelling feels like losing a habit, not just skipping a purchase
We can price the single-visit option higher ($35) than the effective per-wash membership rate (~$15-20/wash at 3-4x/month), which nudges people toward the recurring plan
If you're in LA and want your car looking clean without ever thinking about it again, we're taking on new members now. If you're running (or starting) a mobile service business yourself, happy to swap notes on the membership-vs-per-job model.
