5 Mistakes Startups Make When Building Their First Mobile Game

I've built mobile games for startups for years. Here are the 5 biggest mistakes I keep seeing founders make — and how to avoid them:

1. Building too many features at launch

Your MVP should have ONE core game loop that's fun. That's it. Polish that until it's addictive, then layer in progression, social features, and monetization.

2. Ignoring retention from day one

If players don't come back on Day 2, you have a content problem — not a marketing problem. Build your retention hooks before you spend a dollar on ads.

3. Choosing the wrong engine

Unity vs Unreal vs cross-platform frameworks — each has tradeoffs. For most startup mobile games, Unity gives you the best speed-to-market without sacrificing quality.

4. No soft launch

Launching globally without a soft launch in a test market is gambling with your budget. Soft launch, gather data, iterate, THEN scale.

5. Underestimating App Store Optimization

Your icon, screenshots, and first 3 seconds of your preview video determine 80% of your conversion rate. Treat ASO like a product feature, not an afterthought.

If you're a startup building a mobile game and want a dev team that's been through this — reach out.
