The 5 money conversations every parent should have before their kid turns 10
Most adults wish someone had taught them about money earlier. Here's what I'm teaching my students โ and what you can start today:
1. "Money is earned, not given"
Even at age 6, kids can understand that work creates value. Set up a simple chore-to-allowance system. It's their first paycheck.
2. "You can't buy everything โ and that's okay"
This is budgeting in kid language. Give them 3 jars: Save, Spend, Share. Every time they get money, they split it. Instant financial framework.
3. "Waiting makes things better"
Delayed gratification is the #1 predictor of financial success. Try the "want list" โ they write down what they want and revisit it in 2 weeks. Most of the time, they don't even want it anymore.
4. "Some money can grow"
Introduce the concept of investing with a simple example: "If you save โฌ10 and it grows by โฌ1 every month, how much do you have in a year?" Make it visual with a chart they draw themselves.
5. "Mistakes are part of learning"
Let them make small money mistakes now โ buying something they regret, running out of allowance early. These โฌ5 lessons now prevent โฌ5,000 lessons later.
I built Money Explorers to give parents a step-by-step system for all of this. But even if you never join โ have these 5 conversations. Your kids will thank you.
