Why your candle burns unevenly (and how to fix it)

If your candle tunnels down the middle and leaves a ring of wax on the sides, you're not alone. It's the most common candle problem — and it's almost always caused by one thing.

The first burn matters the most.

When you light a new candle for the first time, you need to let it burn long enough for the entire top layer to melt edge-to-edge. For most candles, that's 2-3 hours. If you blow it out too early, the wax develops a "memory ring" and will always tunnel from that point on.

Here are 3 quick rules for better burns:

  1. First burn = full melt pool. Let the wax melt all the way to the edges before extinguishing.

  2. Trim the wick to ¼ inch before every light. A long wick creates a bigger flame, more soot, and uneven heat.

  3. Don't burn for more than 4 hours straight. The wick can mushroom and cause smoking.

These are the same principles we follow when hand-pouring every Glow With Envy candle. We use 100% soy wax with cotton wicks — they burn cleaner, last longer, and throw scent better than paraffin.
