By the time your water looks cloudy, the chemistry has been off for days. Test weekly at minimum — pH and chlorine drift faster than you think, especially in summer heat.

2. Running the pump too few hours

Your pump needs to circulate the full volume of your pool at least once a day. For most residential pools, that's 8-12 hours. Running it 4 hours "to save electricity" costs you way more in chemicals and algae treatments.

3. Ignoring the filter pressure gauge

That little gauge on your filter tells you when it's time to clean or backwash. If the pressure is 8-10 PSI above your clean baseline, you're overdue. A dirty filter makes everything else harder.
