5 Car Photography Mistakes That Make Your Shots Look Amateur

I've shot hundreds of cars over the past few years. Here are the 5 mistakes I see beginners make constantly — and all of them are easy to fix.

1. Shooting at noon

Harsh overhead sun kills reflections and creates ugly shadows under the car. Shoot during golden hour (first/last hour of sunlight) or on overcast days. The paint will thank you.

2. Standing eye-level

Most beginners stand straight up and shoot. Get LOW. Knee-height or lower gives cars that aggressive, powerful stance. The lower you go, the more dramatic the shot.

3. Ignoring the background

A $200k car in front of a dumpster is still a photo of a dumpster. Scout your location before the shoot. Clean backgrounds, interesting architecture, or open roads make all the difference.

4. Over-editing

We've all cranked the saturation to 100 at some point. Stop. Clean, natural edits with subtle color grading will always look more professional than an HDR nightmare.

5. No movement shots

Static shots are safe. Rolling shots and panning shots are where the magic happens. Even a slow 20mph roll with a low shutter speed (1/80 or lower) adds insane energy.
