5 things I wish I knew before going freelance as a MUA
I've worked with hundreds of makeup artists and the pattern is always the same โ incredible talent, zero business structure.
Here's what separates MUAs who book consistently from those who burn out:
1. Your pricing needs a framework, not a vibe. If you're guessing what to charge based on what other artists post on Instagram, you're leaving money on the table. Your rate should account for time, travel, products used, and your experience level.
2. A contract isn't optional. One no-show or last-minute cancellation without a signed agreement and you'll wish you had one. Protect your time and your income.
3. Your Instagram grid isn't a business plan. Great content gets attention. But without a booking system, clear packages, and a follow-up process, that attention doesn't convert to revenue.
4. Client experience > client count. One bride who refers you to five friends is worth more than fifty random DMs. Build a process that makes every client feel premium.
5. You need systems before you need more bookings. More clients without structure just means more chaos. Get your backend right first โ contracts, invoicing, scheduling, branding โ then scale.
This is exactly why I built The MUA Vault. It's a complete startup kit with every template, framework, and strategy you need to run your MUA business like a real business.
No more winging it. ๐ค
