Why we stopped scheduling 'activities' for our 2-year-olds

I run a weekly outdoor play group for toddlers, and the thing that surprised me most after a year of doing this: the less structure we impose, the more the kids actually engage.

We used to plan little "nature crafts" and mini-games. Most 2-4 year olds ignored the plan entirely and just went straight for the mud puddle, the stick pile, or a random rock. So we stopped fighting it.

Now every session is just: safe boundary, loose prompts ("can you find something round?"), and time. That's it. Turns out unstructured outdoor time at this age builds way more — balance, risk assessment, social negotiation over who gets the good stick — than any planned activity we tried.

If you're running anything for toddlers outdoors: bring less curriculum, bring more boots. The kids will do the rest.
