Spent the last few years testing sensors across every major gaming mouse release, and the DPI number obsession in this community is mostly noise.
Here's what actually moves the needle for aim consistency:
eDPI consistency across games, not raw DPI. Your effective sensitivity (DPI × in-game sens) is what your muscle memory locks onto. Changing DPI while adjusting in-game sens to compensate does nothing for "precision" — it's the same eDPI.
Polling rate matters more at low sensitivity. If you run low eDPI (good for precision aiming), a 1000Hz+ polling rate reduces the micro-stutter between cursor updates. At high eDPI it matters less because you're covering more distance per movement anyway.
Sensor smoothing/acceleration is still hiding in "performance" presets on more mice than people think. Always check for a raw input / 1:1 mode and use it — most stock software presets apply some filtering you don't want for competitive play.
Grip style changes what specs matter. Fingertip grip benefits from lighter mice (sub-60g) and higher lift-off distance tolerance. Palm grip benefits more from shape/ergonomics than weight — chasing ultralight mice as a palm-grip player is often a wasted upgrade.
If you're benchmarking a new mouse, test eDPI consistency and raw mode first — the DPI number on the box tells you almost nothing on its own.
