Why your favorite American snacks taste different in Mexico (and how to get the real ones)
Here's something most people don't realize — a lot of the "American" snacks you find in Mexican stores are actually reformulated for the local market. Different ingredients, different flavor profiles, sometimes completely different recipes.
That Doritos bag at your local OXXO? Not the same as what you'd grab at a 7-Eleven in Texas.
The biggest differences:
🧀 Cheetos in Mexico use a different cheese powder blend
🍫 Hershey's bars have a different cocoa ratio
🍪 Oreos have adjusted sweetness levels for the Mexican market
🥤 Drinks often swap high fructose corn syrup for cane sugar (sometimes better, sometimes not)
We started Munchies Lab because we got tired of "almost" getting the real thing. Now we import the actual US versions — same factory, same recipe, same flavor you'd get walking into a Walmart in El Paso.
If you've ever wondered why that snack "just didn't hit the same" — now you know.
