Why most traders fail auction theory (and what to do instead)
Most traders discover auction theory, read a few things about value areas and TPOs, and conclude it doesn't work.
Here's what they're missing.
They're treating auction theory as a pattern system. They look at the profile, find the shape, call the trade. That's not auction theory — that's astrology with better charts.
Auction theory is a framework for understanding why price moves. The auction is always asking one question: is this price fair? When it finds fair value, it rotates. When it doesn't, it trends. Everything — every indicator, every level, every institutional flow signal — is downstream of that question.
The traders who actually use it well aren't reading profiles. They're asking:
Is the market in balance or imbalance right now?
Where did the last auction fail, and why?
What does current volume distribution tell me about where the next rotation starts?
That reframe — from pattern to logic — is the whole game.
We've spent years building systems around this. Six of us, between us we've traded the pits, run CTAs, and built ML models against the live tape. The auction was there for all of it.
If you want to go deeper, we run daily live sessions at The Auction Stack.
