5 Hindi Phrases That Will Change Your India Trip

Most tourists in India stick to English. Big mistake.

Even knowing 5 phrases in Hindi transforms your experience — locals light up, you get better prices, and doors open that stay closed to typical tourists.

Here are the 5 phrases I teach every traveler:

1. "Kitne ka hai?" (कितने का है?) — "How much?"

The single most useful phrase in any Indian market. Say it with a smile and you've already saved 30%.

2. "Shukriya" (शुक्रिया) — "Thank you"

More casual than "dhanyavaad" and feels natural. Indians will immediately warm up to you.

3. "Bhaiya/Didi" (भैया/दीदी) — "Brother/Sister"

Use these to address shopkeepers, auto drivers, or strangers. It's respectful and builds instant rapport.

4. "Thoda thoda" (थोड़ा थोड़ा) — "A little bit"

When someone asks "Hindi aati hai?" (Do you know Hindi?), say "thoda thoda" with a head wobble. Guaranteed smiles.

5. "Chalo!" (चलो!) — "Let's go!"

Tell your auto driver this and you sound like you've been in India for years.
