Most people betting NBA player props are doing it wrong.

They're tailing Twitter influencers, going by gut, or betting on players they "feel good about" that night. The books love these bettors. They're the ones paying the winners.

Here's the actual 5-step process sharp bettors use — what we call the EV+ Filter System:

Step 1 — Start with the no-vig line

Every sportsbook bakes a margin into their lines. Before anything else, strip it out. OddsJam's EV calculator does this automatically. A "good" line on the surface often has negative expected value once the vig is removed.

Step 2 — Compare against sharp books

Pinnacle, Circa, and a handful of other books set sharper lines than the recreational books. If DraftKings has a prop at -115 and Pinnacle has it at +105, that's a real signal. You want to be on the same side as the sharp books.

Step 3 — Check the alternate lines

Books often misprice alternates. If the main line for Jaylen Brown points is 22.5, the alt at 19.5 may be severely underpriced. The pricing models for alts are less sophisticated — that's where edges persist longer.

Step 4 — Run the correlation check

Correlated props move together. If a game has a high implied total and pace, points/assists props for high-usage players get a lift. Don't stack anti-correlated props — you're canceling your own edge.

Step 5 — Check line movement in the hour before tip

Sharp money moves lines. If a prop opened at 24.5 and has since steamed to 23.5 with handle going the other way, that's a key signal. Late steam on player props is often the most reliable data point you'll find.
