A declined grant is often a targeting error, not a writing error
Most small NGOs I meet do not have a “we can’t write” problem. They have a list problem.
They spend three weeks on a proposal for a foundation whose last 990 shows they only grant to pre-selected organisations in one U.S. state. Or they chase a multilateral call that requires three years of audits they do not have. The narrative was fine. The eligibility was not.
Before anyone opens Word:
Can they fund your legal status in your geography?
Is the ask inside a published grant range you can actually administer?
Do they accept unsolicited applications — or do you have a real invitation?
If it is a U.S. private foundation, have you looked at the 990, not just the About page?
If any of those are a hard no, killing the name in week one is the win. A clean no is cheaper than a beautiful rejected proposal in month four.
That is the whole point of prospect research. Alignment is not “our mission sounds like theirs.”
