The 3-Filter Test I Use Before Starting Any Faceless Side Hustle

Most people pick a side hustle based on what sounds exciting. Then they spend 3 months building something nobody wants to buy.

I wasted time on 4 different ideas before I figured out a simple screening method. Now I won't touch an idea unless it passes all 3 filters.

Here's the test:

---

Filter 1: Can You Describe the Buyer in One Sentence?

Not "everyone who wants money." Not "people interested in AI."

One specific person in one specific situation.

Example that works: "A freelance graphic designer who loses clients because they don't know how to price retainer packages."

Example that fails: "People who want to make money online."

If you can't describe your buyer in one sentence, the idea is too vague to sell.

Filter 2: Are People Already Paying for a Worse Version?

This is the filter most beginners skip.

Search Gumroad, Etsy, Udemy, or any marketplace for your topic. Look for products with reviews — even bad ones. If people are paying $20-$50 for something mediocre in your space, that's a GREEN signal.

If you search and find nothing? That's not an "untapped opportunity." That's a warning.

No existing buyers = no proven demand = high risk of building something nobody wants.

Filter 3: Can You Deliver It Without Showing Your Face?

This one matters if you want to stay anonymous. Some business models require personal branding. Others don't.

Things that work faceless:

  • Digital templates and worksheets

  • AI-assisted content packages

  • Automated email sequences

  • Done-for-you systems and toolkits

Things that don't:

  • Coaching calls (usually)

  • YouTube talking-head channels

  • Personal consulting

How to Score Your Idea

Run every idea through all 3 filters.

  • Green on all 3? Worth validating further.

  • Yellow on any filter? Fixable, but needs work before you invest time.

  • Red on any filter? Drop it. Move on. Don't convince yourself it'll work.

Most people have 5-10 ideas floating in their head. After this test, you'll usually have 1-2 worth pursuing. That's the point — you want to eliminate fast so you can focus on what actually has a chance.

I built an entire system around this screening method, plus a 30-day validation sequence to go from idea to first sale. That's what the No-Face $1,000 Blueprint covers if you want the full framework.

But even if you just use these 3 filters on your next idea, you'll avoid the biggest mistake beginners make: building before validating.

Try it. Write down your top 3 ideas and score them. You might be surprised which ones survive.
