The downtime alert that actually matters: the one your client never sees you scramble for

Ran client sites for years before I built Nodewatch, and the thing that kills freelance credibility isn't downtime itself — it's finding out about it from the client.

A few things I learned the hard way:

  • 1-minute checks beat 5-minute checks by a mile. Most monitoring tools default to 5-min intervals to save server costs. On a client site, those 4 extra minutes are the difference between "fixed before anyone noticed" and an awkward email.

  • Multi-channel alerts matter more than fancy dashboards. SMS + Slack + email redundancy means you never miss the alert because one channel had an outage of its own (yes, that happens).

  • Status pages are an underused trust signal. Sharing a live status page with a client — even before they ask — signals you're on top of their infrastructure, not just reactive.

If you manage more than 2-3 client sites and you're still checking them manually or relying on client complaints as your alert system, that's the #1 thing to fix this month. It's the cheapest reputation insurance you can buy.
