Why 90% of local businesses are invisible on social media (and the 3 things that fix it)
I've managed social media for dozens of local businesses ā gyms, restaurants, salons, dental offices. And there's a pattern I see every single time.
The owner knows they "should be posting" but either:
They post inconsistently (2 times a week, then nothing for a month)
They post the wrong content (stock photos with generic captions nobody engages with)
They have zero strategy beyond "just post something"
Here's what actually moves the needle for local businesses:
1. Show the humans behind the business.
People don't follow a logo. They follow the barber who cracks jokes, the gym owner who shares client wins, the chef who shows the prep at 5 AM. Behind-the-scenes content outperforms polished graphics 3:1 for local businesses.
2. Post with a local-first mindset.
Geo-tags, local hashtags, community events, shoutouts to neighboring businesses. The algorithm rewards local relevance. A post that resonates with 500 people in your zip code is worth more than 10K random impressions.
3. Engage before you expect engagement.
Comment on your customers' posts. Reply to every DM within an hour. Repost user-generated content. Social media is a two-way street, and most businesses treat it like a billboard.
The businesses I've seen 2-3x their foot traffic from social media all have one thing in common: consistency + authenticity + local focus.
That's what we do at Nova Social. If you're a local business owner tired of winging it on social, we should talk.
