Most people don't finish their first novel because of one wrong assumption

I've spent a lot of time around first-time writers, and almost all of them get stuck for the same reason: they think they need the whole book figured out before they start writing it.

They wait for the perfect outline. The perfect opening line. The perfect amount of world-building. And they never actually write page one.

Here's the uncomfortable truth: your first draft is not the book. It's the raw material for the book. Published authors don't write masterpieces on the first pass — they write messy, incomplete, sometimes embarrassing first drafts, and then they fix them in revision. The draft's only job is to exist.

The beginners who actually finish tend to do three things differently:

  1. They pick a genre they genuinely love reading, not one they think sounds impressive.

  2. They outline just enough to know where they're going next — not the whole map.

  3. They protect a small, repeatable writing habit (even 20 minutes a day beats an occasional 6-hour binge).

If you've got a novel idea you've been sitting on for months (or years), I'd genuinely love to hear what it is in the comments. Sometimes just saying it out loud is what gets you to open the doc.
