5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before My First Nursing Job

I've seen too many new grads walk into their first unit and feel completely blindsided. Not by the clinical stuff — by everything else.

1. Your resume doesn't matter as much as your clinical rotation connections.

Most new grad positions are filled through internal referrals. If you did clinicals somewhere and made a good impression, that's your strongest play.

2. The first 3 months will make you question everything.

You'll wonder if you chose the wrong career. You'll cry in your car. This is normal — it means you're adjusting to the hardest transition in healthcare.

3. Night shift isn't just about staying awake.

It rewires your entire life. Blackout curtains, melatonin timing, meal prep. The nurses who burn out fastest are the ones who wing it.

4. Learn to say "I don't know, but I'll find out."

No preceptor respects a new grad who pretends to know everything. They respect honesty and follow-through.

5. Your first job probably won't be your dream job — and that's fine.

Med-surg, tele, or a unit you never pictured yourself on? Take it. Learn the fundamentals. Specialize later.

The new grads who thrive aren't the ones with the best grades — they're the ones who prepare for the real transition, not just the exam.
