Why Most Options Traders Blow Up Scaling From $10k to $50k (And the Fix)

Most retail options traders don't blow up because of a bad trade. They blow up because their position sizing stays flat while their account grows — meaning the dollar risk on a "normal" trade quietly triples as the account triples.

Here's the pattern I see constantly:

The Mistake

  • Trader starts at $10k risking 2% ($200) per trade. Fine.

  • Account grows to $30k. Trader is still "just doing what worked" — except now that same setup is often sized at 2%+ of the new balance ($600+), without ever consciously deciding to increase risk.

  • One bad week with 3-4 losses at that size does more damage in dollars and psychologically than the same losing streak did at $10k.

The Fix: Risk % Should Decrease as Capital Increases

Counterintuitively, the more capital you're trading, the lower your risk-per-trade percentage should go:

Capital

Max Risk/Trade

$5k-$15k

1.5%

$15k-$25k

1.5%

$25k-$35k

1.25%

$35k-$50k

1%

$50k+

0.75-1%

This keeps dollar-risk growth gradual instead of exponential, and it's the single highest-leverage adjustment most traders never make.

Quick Gut Check

Take your last 5 trades. Calculate what % of your current account each one risked. If any of them are above the table for your account size, that's your leak — not your strategy, not the market. Fix the sizing before you touch anything else.

Happy to go deeper on correlation limits and portfolio heat caps if there's interest — that's the next piece most people miss.
