The 3 words on snack labels that mean "added sugar in disguise"
I spent way too many hours in the baby food/kids snack aisle before I started making my own protein bites, and here's the thing nobody tells you: "healthy" snack marketing is mostly noise. The label is where the truth is, and food brands know most parents don't have time to decode it.
Here are 3 ingredient names that are just added sugar wearing a disguise — if you see these near the top of an ingredient list, it's a sugar-first snack no matter what the front of the box says:
Rice syrup / brown rice syrup — metabolizes almost identically to high fructose corn syrup, just sounds more "natural."
Evaporated cane juice — literally just sugar. The rebrand exists specifically so it doesn't have to say "sugar."
Fruit juice concentrate — once the fiber is stripped out, it behaves like straight sugar in the body, not like fruit.
What I look for instead: a protein source in the first 3 ingredients, and a sugar content I can trace back to something whole (dates, a little honey) rather than a syrup blend.
That's basically the whole philosophy behind our protein bites — real ingredients you could pronounce and explain to your kid. Happy to answer questions if you're trying to relabel-detox your own pantry. What's the snack that fooled you the longest?
